Overview: The goal of this course is to describe how physical, chemical and biological processes interact to determine the species composition, biogeochemical activities and trophic structure of marine communities. Outstanding problems currently facing biological oceanographers and earth system scientists are discussed, as are current attempts and methodologies to address them.

Course Assessment: The Faculty of Science Grading Scale will be applied to the cumulative score on the following assessment components: a mid-term exam (20%), two homework assignments (15% each), a final exam (40%) and class participation (10%).

Field trips: Two field trips to Bedford Basin are tentatively planned for February 5 and March 28. These will start at 8:30 am and likely last until early afternoon.
